Terra inlet VANOS issue

Hi, I've got a 2021 Nissan Terra, gasoline engine, with around 244985 km on the clock. Recently, the check engine light popped on and my fuel consumption has gone up. Could this be related to a faulty inlet VANOS? I understand it could be an issue with one of the camshaft solenoid valves or perhaps a problem with the power supply to it. Has anyone experienced similar?

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old BMW 3 Series few years ago. Same symptoms, check engine light and increased fuel consumption. Did you notice any drop in power, especially at lower RPMs? Maybe some oil sludge?

Yeah, there is some serious oil sludge! And I did notice a bit of low power, but nothing crazy. What was the cause with your BMW? Was it a variable timing issue?

Yep, turned out to be a faulty VANOS solenoid. The variable timing wasn't working correctly, messing with the inlet camshaft timing. If you're seeing oil sludge I would suggest a visit to a mechanic, this is not a small fault.

Thanks for the advice! Dropped the Terra off at my usual workshop, and they confirmed that the inlet VANOS was indeed faulty. Quoted me around 250€ for the repair. Appreciate your help!
