Terracan engine stalls and high fuel consumption

I have a 2004 Hyundai Terracan with a diesel engine. The engine sometimes stalls at idle, and fuel consumption has definitely increased. The check engine light is on, and there's smoke when I accelerate. I've checked the air filter, which seems fine. Could this be a defective mass air flow meter? The car has 80036 km.

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Hyundai Terracan with a diesel engine is experiencing stalling at idle, increased fuel consumption, and smoke during acceleration, with the check engine light on. The air filter was checked and found to be fine, leading to suspicion of a defective mass air flow (MAF) sensor. The symptoms align with a faulty MAF sensor, which can cause rough idling, higher fuel consumption, and performance decline. The issue was confirmed by a workshop, and the MAF sensor was replaced.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had similar symptoms with my Hyundai Santa Fe. Hard to say definitively without diagnostics, but a faulty MAF sensor can definitely cause those problems. Higher fuel consumption, rough idling, and even the check engine light coming on are all common signs. Have you noticed any decline in overall engine performance?

Yes, I have noticed a decline in performance. The acceleration isn't as smooth as it used to be. I suspected the MAF sensor since those symptoms point to it. Is it possible to test the sensor or should I just replace it? How likely is it that the MAF sensor is faulty?

Testing the sensor is possible, but you'd need the right equipment and know-how. Given the symptoms and your car's age, it's certainly plausible the MAF sensor is the culprit. My suggestion is to get it checked out at a workshop; they should be able to confirm the issue. Replacing parts without proper diagnosis can become expensive and time-consuming.

Thank you for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed the MAF sensor was defective. The repair cost 365€.
