Terracan Low Tire Pressure ABS and Steering Issues

I'm getting a low tire pressure warning on my 2006 Hyundai Terracan diesel with 179038 km. The ABS lamp lights up, the steering wheel vibrates, and it requires increased effort to steer. I checked the tire pressures, and they seem okay, but the warning persists. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Hyundai Terracan diesel is experiencing a low tire pressure warning, ABS light activation, and steering issues despite seemingly correct tire pressures. The problem may stem from a faulty tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) valve, potentially causing pressure loss or malfunctioning, which can confuse the system and trigger errors. It is suggested to check the TPMS valves or swap the wheel position to identify the issue. The problem was resolved by replacing a faulty valve and recalibrating the system, eliminating all warnings and restoring normal steering function.

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my Terracan. Check the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) valves. Could be a faulty valve causing pressure loss, even if the tire itself seems inflated. TPMS can throw all sorts of errors if it's on the fritz.

Thanks. By faulty valve, do you mean a slow leak that's hard to detect, or something else entirely? And what kind of errors did you experience? I'm seeing the ABS light and steering issues, not just the tire pressure warning.

Could be a slow leak, or the valve itself might be malfunctioning, confusing the TPMS. The ABS light and steering issues can be related, as the system relies on wheel speed sensors which are also used by the ABS. Get the TPMS checked by a workshop, or swap the suspect wheel to another position to see if the error moves. That’s how I finally nailed it down.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. Took it to the shop, and you were spot on - faulty valve in the tire. New valve installed and system recalibrated. Cost me 280€. All warnings are gone, and the steering is back to normal.
