Terracan Oil Pressure Warning

My 2003 Hyundai Terracan diesel is having issues. The oil pressure light is on, and there are loud mechanical noises. It has done 172826 km. The oil level is fine. Could it be a different oil viscosity or a faulty oil pressure sensor? I'm worried it's something major.

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Hyundai Terracan diesel is experiencing an oil pressure warning light and loud mechanical noises, despite the oil level being fine. Possible causes include incorrect oil viscosity or a faulty oil pressure sensor, but a more serious issue like oil pump failure is suspected. The recommendation is to have the vehicle checked by a professional immediately to prevent further engine damage, as the oil pump is crucial for maintaining proper lubrication.

That sounds rough. I had something similar with my old Ford Mondeo, although it was a petrol engine. The oil pressure light flickered, and the engine sounded like a bag of spanners. For me, it turned out to be oil pump failure. Has the engine started feeling sluggish?

That sounds concerning! My Terracan hasn't felt sluggish, not yet anyway. But what happens when the oil pump fails? I thought maybe it was just a faulty sensor because the engine seems to run okay, apart from the noise. Is there an easy way to check the oil pump?

The oil pump keeps the engine oil circulating, maintaining pressure to lubricate everything. When it fails, the oil can't reach all the parts, causing friction and those nasty noises, eventually leading to serious engine damage. You can't really check it yourself without taking things apart. Best bet is to get it to a workshop pronto before things get worse. Sounds like you may have caught it early, so fingers crossed! Don't keep running the engine like that, or you'll be looking at big costs. The repair of the Ford Mondeo was not cheap.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took your word for it and went straight to the workshop. Turns out you were right. The oil pump was defective. The mechanic replaced it, and the total cost was 755€.
