Terrano check engine light and exhaust smell

I'm at my wit's end with my 2003 Nissan Terrano gasoline guzzler! The check engine light is mocking me, and the engine runs rough. I smell raw exhaust fumes and suspect an exhaust pipe leak. Could this be the catalytic converter? It only has 23356 km! I'm no mechanic, but could it also be the EGR valve or even the particulate filter?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Nissan Terrano is experiencing a check engine light, rough engine performance, and a raw exhaust smell, possibly indicating an exhaust pipe leak. The owner suspects issues with the catalytic converter, EGR valve, or particulate filter. Another person suggests the lambda sensor might be the cause, based on a similar experience. A diagnostic test at a workshop is recommended to identify the exact issue, with a focus on checking the lambda sensor first.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my Terrano a while back. My check engine light was on, and the engine felt rough with a strong exhaust smell. Did you check the lambda sensor? That was the culprit in my case.

Lambda sensor, eh? I've heard of those, but I wouldn't know where to even begin looking. How did you figure out it was the lambda sensor specifically? Did you have any other symptoms, or was it just the light and the rough running?

I didn't figure it out myself, to be honest. I took it to a workshop. They ran a diagnostic test and told me it was the lambda sensor. Given your symptoms, it's worth checking out. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous, so a proper inspection is probably best.

Thanks for the tip! I'll take it to a workshop this week and ask them to check the lambda sensor first. Hopefully, it's just that and nothing too expensive. I'm bracing myself for a hefty bill; they quoted me 375€, parts and labor included. At least I have some idea of what it might be now, thanks again!
