Terrano Coolant Loss
Summary of the thread
The 2002 Nissan Terrano diesel was experiencing a recurring coolant loss and a check engine light related to low coolant levels. Despite topping off the coolant and checking for visible leaks, the issue persisted. Suggestions included inspecting the coolant reservoir for cracks and examining the water pump weep hole for leaks. Ultimately, the problem was identified as a hairline crack in the coolant reservoir, which was resolved by replacing the reservoir and flushing the system.

Good shout on the reservoir, hadn't considered that specifically. I gave it a quick once-over, but I'll take another look with a flashlight. The water pump weep hole, is that easy to access on the diesel? Anything specific to look for besides just wetness?

Yeah, the reservoir can be sneaky. As for the water pump, it's on the front of the engine, driven by the timing belt. You might need a mirror to get a good view of the weep hole. Look for any signs of dried coolant residue – usually a crusty, colored deposit. Honestly, if you're not seeing anything obvious, it might be worth getting it pressure tested by a shop. They can pinpoint small leaks that are tough to find otherwise.

Appreciate the tips. Turns out it was a hairline crack in the coolant reservoir. Couldn't see it until I really put some pressure on it. Replaced the reservoir, flushed the system and filled it up - error is gone now. Cost me 52€ for the reservoir. Thanks again!

I had something similar happen with my Terrano. Coolant disappearing, no obvious leaks. Have you checked the coolant reservoir itself for cracks? Sometimes they're hard to spot, especially when the plastic gets old and brittle. Also, might be worth looking closely at the water pump weep hole. If the seal is failing, it might only leak when the engine is running and under pressure, making it evaporate quickly.
