Terrano rough cold start
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Nissan Terrano diesel is experiencing rough cold starts, a check engine light, and increased fuel consumption. The suspected cause is a defective PTC heater, an electric auxiliary heater that aids in warming the engine and cabin. The issue may stem from faulty wiring or a failed heating element. The suggested solution is to inspect and potentially replace the PTC heater, with professional assistance recommended for those uncomfortable with electrical diagnostics.

Thanks for the info! Where exactly is this PTC heater located, and what should I be looking for in terms of dodgy wiring? I'm decent with a wrench, but electrics aren't exactly my forte.

On my Volvo it was integrated into the blower motor assembly, part of the HVAC system. Trace the wiring from the blower motor, look for any burnt connectors or damaged wires. If you're not comfortable doing electrical diagnosis, probably best to get a workshop to check the heating element itself. A defective PTC heater will need replacing.

Just got back from the workshop. You nailed it! The electric auxiliary heater was indeed defective, causing all sorts of problems. They quoted me 350€ for the repair, parts and labor. Ouch. Thanks a bunch for pointing me in the right direction! At least I knew what I was talking about when I brought it in.

Sounds familiar! I had similar symptoms on my older Volvo. 'PTC' stands for Positive Temperature Coefficient, an electric auxiliary heater that helps warm up the cabin and engine faster when it's cold. If it fails, it can cause poor cold starts and increased fuel consumption as the engine struggles to reach operating temperature. Have you checked the wiring and connections to the heater? A loose or corroded connection could also be the culprit.
