Thalia rough running exhaust smell

I'm experiencing issues with my 2011 Renault Thalia (Symbol) with a gasoline engine. The check engine light is on, and the engine runs rough. I've also detected an exhaust leak with a strong odor. The car has 163237 km on it. Could this be a defective lambda sensor, or should I investigate the EGR valve or the particulate filter?

Rough running and a strong exhaust smell alongside the check engine light points to a serious exhaust treatment malfunction. Before diving into EGR or particulate filter issues, have you considered NOx sensors or DEF fluid levels (if applicable to your vehicle)? A faulty lambda sensor is a strong possibility given the symptoms.

Regarding the lambda sensor, are there specific diagnostic steps I can take to confirm its failure before replacement, or is it best to simply replace it and see if that resolves the problem?

While DIY diagnostics are possible, the strong smell and rough running suggest a lambda sensor issue is likely. Replacing it without proper diagnostic tools is risky. At this mileage, a malfunctioning sensor wouldn't be surprising. A workshop visit is recommended to confirm this. If you're comfortable with basic tools, inspect the sensor's wiring for damage first.

I appreciate the advice. I visited a workshop, and after diagnostics, the lambda sensor was identified as the issue. The replacement cost 375€. The issue is resolved.
