Thalia Symbol Intermittent Starting
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Renault Thalia/Symbol with a diesel engine was experiencing intermittent starting issues, occasionally shutting off while driving, and running roughly. The problem was suspected to be related to the ignition system, particularly the ignition switch. After taking the car to a workshop, it was confirmed that the ignition switch was faulty, and repairing it resolved the issues, resulting in the car running smoothly again.

The starter motor does engage. It cranks, but the engine doesn't consistently fire. Where is the ignition coil located, and is it easily tested? Also, could this be related to the dashboard light issue?

Alright, the fact that the starter motor engages rules out a completely dead battery or starter. I am almost certain that the dashboard light issue is related to the ignition problems. Honestly, based on what you've described, the best course of action would be to take it to a workshop. Diagnosing electrical gremlins like this can be a pain, and you don't want to risk damaging anything further.

Based on your advice, I took the car to a workshop, where they confirmed that the ignition switch was indeed faulty. The total repair cost, including parts and labor, came to 52€. The car is now running smoothly again.

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my old Opel Astra. The dashboard light was flickering, and sometimes the engine just died. Check the ignition coil and the ignition key itself. A faulty ignition switch can cause all sorts of weird electrical problems. Does the starter motor engage when you try to start the car, or is there just silence?
