Tiburon engine running rich
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Hyundai Tiburon is experiencing issues with running rich, leading to a drop in power, rough engine performance, increased fuel consumption, and jerking during acceleration. The initial suspicion was a defective fuel injector valve. Suggestions included checking the oxygen sensor, air filter, and spark plugs, as these could also cause similar symptoms. Ultimately, a mechanic confirmed the issue was indeed a defective fuel injector, which was replaced, resolving the problem.

Thanks for the quick reply! I replaced the spark plugs about 20,000 km ago. The air filter is newer, about 5,000 km old. How did you know it was the oxygen sensor in your case? Did you have the exact same symptoms, including the jerking?

Yep, the jerking was the biggest clue for me, along with the terrible fuel economy. I'd definitely get the oxygen sensor checked out. Honestly, if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, take it to a trusted mechanic. Could be other things like the fuel injectors as you initially suspected, but a diagnostic check will pinpoint it.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to a mechanic, and you were right – it was the fuel injectors! They replaced the defective injector. The final bill was 515€. Runs like new now!

I had a similar problem with my Tiburon. Have you checked your oxygen sensor? A faulty O2 sensor can definitely cause a rich mixture. Also, when was the last time you replaced your air filter and spark plugs? Those could also contribute to the problem.
