Thanks for the detailed write-up. Sounds exactly like what my Tiguan is going through right now. The cooling system control module diagnosis makes total sense considering my symptoms. Since I am planning to get this fixed, would you mind sharing how much the repair set you back? Also curious if you have experienced any related issues since the fix? I want to avoid car overheating problems down the line, so would rather address this properly now than risk bigger issues later. My local VW shop quoted me quite high, so trying to get a sense of reasonable costs for this type of repair.

After getting the Tiguan inspected, the issue turned out less severe than my Passat case. The cooling grille restriction was indeed the main culprit, and clearing it resolved most symptoms. The mechanic also found and replaced a defective fuse in the cooling system circuit, costing 52€. The total repair was much cheaper than my Passat thermal management module replacement. Since fixing the restricted cooling grille and fuse, the engine temperature readings have normalized, and warm-up times are back to normal. The check engine light has stayed off. Regular inspection of the cooling grille for debris and blockages helps prevent similar issues. The engine overheating risk is minimal now that proper airflow is restored. Definitely worth getting these cooling system issues checked early, my repair costs would have been much higher if left unaddressed. The repair shop did a thorough diagnostic scan to confirm no other cooling system components were affected. If your quote seems high, they might be assuming worst-case scenarios like my Passat needed. Worth getting a second opinion focusing on the cooling grille and basic electrical checks first.

Thanks everyone for the help. Just got back from the shop and wanted to share my experience. Took it to a different mechanic who specializes in VW cooling systems. The radiator grille was partially blocked with leaves and debris, but they also found a cracked coolant temperature sensor. Total bill came to 210€, 45€ for the cleaning and inspection, 95€ for the sensor, and 70€ for labor. The engine cooling system is working perfectly now. Temperature gauge shows normal readings and warm-up time is back to what it should be. Check engine light cleared after they replaced the sensor and reset the system. Much cheaper than I expected after that first quote, which was nearly 800€ for a complete cooling system overhaul. Really glad I got that second opinion and found the actual issue. The automotive cooling specialist took time to show me exactly what was wrong and how to prevent future problems. Going to make checking the radiator grille part of my regular maintenance routine from now on. Definitely learned my lesson about keeping those cooling passages clear.

Had similar issues with my 2018 VW Passat TDI. The symptoms you describe match what I experienced, inconsistent temperature readings and delayed engine thermal management. The radiator grille blockage is a common issue, but in my case it turned out to be more serious. The cooling system control module was malfunctioning, causing incorrect temperature readings and affecting the engine cooling performance. The check engine light was triggered by the faulty control unit. The repair required: Full diagnostic scan, Removal and replacement of the thermal management module, Recalibration of the cooling system, Clearing fault codes While checking the radiator grille for debris is a good first step, the combination of symptoms, especially the check engine light, suggests an electrical or control issue. The delayed warm-up is particularly telling, as it indicates the system isnt properly regulating engine temperature. This was a significant repair requiring specialized diagnostic equipment. If your mechanic suggests just cleaning the grille, get a second opinion. Modern diesel engines have complex cooling systems, and proper diagnosis is crucial to prevent engine overheating issues.
