Toledo Brake Fluid Low and Pedal Feel Issue

I have a 2017 Seat Toledo with a diesel engine. Recently, the brake fluid warning light came on. I checked the reservoir, and the brake fluid level is low. The weird thing is that the brake pedal feels a bit strange not as firm as usual. Could this be related? I'm thinking maybe it's just time for new brake pads, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

Low brake fluid in a 2017 Toledo diesel with that mileage usually points to worn brake pads. As the pads wear, the pistons in the calipers extend further, requiring more fluid from the reservoir. Have you noticed any squealing or grinding noises when braking? Also, is the brake fluid warning light constantly on, or does it flicker? A brake inspection is definitely in order, and be sure they check for any leaks in the hydraulic brakes system while they're at it.

That's helpful. I haven't heard any squealing, but I do get a soft, spongy feeling when I first press the brake pedal, which is new. The warning light is on all the time. If it's just the pads, is a fluid replacement necessary, or is topping it off enough? I am trying to save money where I can.

Yep, the spongy pedal combined with the constant warning light pretty much confirms what I suspected. While topping off the fluid might temporarily silence the warning light, it won't address the underlying problem. And as the pads wear more, you'll run into the same issue again. Plus, if the fluid is low due to worn pads, it's a good idea to flush and replace it anyway. Old brake fluid can absorb moisture, which reduces its effectiveness and can damage the hydraulic brakes system over time. My old Vectra had a similar issue a while ago. Best to get a proper brake inspection and fluid replacement done at a garage. It's not worth risking your safety or potentially causing more expensive damage later on to save a few bucks now.

Took my Toledo to a local garage, and you were spot on. They did a brake inspection and confirmed the front pads were worn down badly. Cost 480€ for new pads, fluid replacement, and labor. The strange pedal feedback is gone, and the warning light is off. Thanks again for the help!
