Toppo's AC & Engine Troubles: Fan Failure Warning Signs
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Mitsubishi Toppo is experiencing issues with the AC blowing hot air and the engine overheating, suspected to be caused by a faulty electric fan. Similar symptoms were resolved in a Mitsubishi Colt by replacing the fan control unit, which had a faulty resistor. The fan's intermittent operation before complete failure suggests a common problem in these models. Immediate inspection and repair are advised to prevent further engine damage.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My mileage is currently at 70616 KM and I just had it serviced last month. The symptoms started about two weeks ago. The fan seems to work occasionally, I can hear it kick in sometimes when I'm idling, but it's really inconsistent. At first I thought it was just the AC acting up, but then I noticed the temperature gauge climbing. Did your fan also work intermittently before it completely failed?

Hey again! Yeah, that sounds really familiar, my Colt had almost the same behavior before things got worse. My fan was also working on and off before it completely gave up at around 85,000 KM. It's actually pretty common with these models. When mine was acting up, I first noticed it would only kick in when the engine was really hot, not at the normal temperature like it should. Sometimes it would work fine for a few days, then start acting up again, super annoying! Eventually, it just stopped working altogether. Since you mentioned yours was just serviced last month, did they do any work near the cooling system? Sometimes these issues can pop up after other maintenance work. In my case, the intermittent fan operation lasted about a month before I got it fixed. Given what you're describing, I'm even more convinced it's the same issue I had with the fan control unit. Don't wait too long to get it checked out though, I learned the hard way that overheating can cause bigger problems. Let me know what you find out! BTW, I'm still driving my Colt (couldn't part with it!), and the fan's been working perfectly since the repair. Money well spent, if you ask me!

Thanks so much for all the details! That's super helpful to know about your experience with the Colt. No, they didn't do any work on the cooling system during the service, just regular maintenance stuff. I think I'll take it to the shop tomorrow since it sounds exactly like what you went through. Don't want to risk any major engine damage! The €480 price tag isn't great news, but it's better than having to deal with bigger problems down the road. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's given me a much clearer idea of what I'm dealing with. I'll update you once I get it checked out!

Hey there! I have some experience with cars and had a similar issue with my 2003 Mitsubishi Colt (pretty close to your Toppo, same family!). I also own a Lancer. Had exactly the same symptoms, AC blowing hot air and engine overheating. Long story short, it was indeed the electric fan control unit that was shot. Took it to my regular workshop and they diagnosed the faulty resistor in the fan control module. Bill came to 480€ including parts and labor, not cheap, but it fixed the problem completely. What's your mileage and when did you first notice these symptoms? Also, does the fan ever come on at all? This info would help me share more relevant details from my experience. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more specific info.
