Touareg Power Loss + Smoke Points to Faulty EGR Valve

My Touareg (2006, gas engine, 32976km) suddenly started performing poorly with reduced power and jerking during acceleration. The check engine light is on, and I notice smoke plus a loud hissing sound when pressing the gas. Engine runs rough and drinks more fuel than usual. Based on some research, I suspect the EGR valve might be the culprit. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Getting worried about going back to my mechanic after a previous bad repair job. Looking for recommendations on how to approach this and what to expect for repair costs.

Summary of the thread

A 2006 VW Touareg experienced reduced power, jerking during acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and smoke, with a check engine light on. These symptoms pointed to a faulty EGR valve, possibly due to carbon buildup causing it to stick open, leading to a vacuum leak and compromised emissions. The recommended solution involved diagnosing the issue through error code scans and inspections, followed by cleaning or replacing the EGR valve and checking vacuum lines. Prompt repair was advised to prevent further engine damage, with costs typically ranging from 300-400€. After repair, the vehicle's performance improved significantly, resolving all issues.

Had similar issues with a 2007 VW Passat 2.0T. The symptoms match exactly what happens with a stuck EGR valve, poor performance, excessive fuel consumption, and rough idle. The hissing sound often indicates a vacuum leak around the EGR system. Last time at the garage, diagnostic tests confirmed carbon buildup was causing the EGR valve to stick open. The vehicle emissions system was compromised, leading to the check engine light and performance issues. The repair involved removing and cleaning the EGR valve, replacing gaskets, and checking connected vacuum lines. This is a serious issue that needs prompt attention. Continuing to drive with a malfunctioning EGR valve can cause: Engine damage from improper air-fuel mixture, Failed emissions tests, Further deterioration of related components, Potential catalytic converter damage Recommend getting it checked soon by a qualified automotive repair shop. The diagnostic process typically involves: 1. Computer scan for error codes 2. Visual inspection of the EGR system 3. Vacuum testing 4. Performance testing under load Cleaning might solve it, but often the valve needs replacement to ensure proper function.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The symptoms with my VW Touareg sound identical to what you encountered. Before booking a repair appointment, would you mind sharing what the final cost was for your EGR valve repair? Also curious if the fix solved all issues or if you noticed any related problems since then. My local shops want different amounts and knowing a ballpark figure would help me avoid overpaying for this automotive repair job.

After visiting my mechanic last month for the EGR valve repair on my Passat, I can report the total cost was 355€ for the complete fix. The repair included replacing the faulty exhaust gas recirculation valve since cleaning wasnt enough due to severe carbon deposits. The investment was worth it as all symptoms disappeared immediately. The engine runs smoothly again, fuel consumption returned to normal, and the check engine light went off. No more hissing sounds or performance issues since the repair. The vacuum leak around the EGR system was also properly sealed as part of the job. In diesel engines especially, this is a common wear item that often needs attention. My advice would be to get it fixed promptly rather than risk additional engine damage. While prices can vary between shops, anything around 300-400€ seems reasonable for this type of repair considering the labor involved and parts costs. The most important part is having it properly diagnosed and repaired by a qualified technician who can test the system thoroughly after installation to ensure everything works correctly.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. I finally took my Touareg to a new mechanic who specializes in VW repairs. The diagnostic confirmed it was indeed the EGR valve causing all those issues. Total repair cost came to 380€ which included replacing the valve and cleaning the intake. The difference in performance is remarkable. No more smoke, hissing sounds or jerking during acceleration. Power is fully restored and fuel consumption is back to normal. The check engine light cleared up right after the repair. Even the rough idle completely disappeared. Definitely learned my lesson about not delaying repairs when these symptoms show up. The mechanic mentioned the carbon buildup was pretty severe and could have caused bigger problems if left unchecked. Really glad I got it sorted before any serious engine damage occurred. Much better experience than my previous repair attempts and worth every cent spent. The thorough testing they did after installation gave me confidence everything was fixed properly this time.
