Tourneo NOx Sensor Error

My 2010 Ford Tourneo with a gasoline engine has been throwing a check engine light lately. I scanned the codes and it's pointing to a NOx sensor failure. I've also noticed a slight exhaust leak. Could a bad connection be the culprit here?

A defective cable or plug connection to the NOx sensor is a common cause for the symptoms you describe, particularly the check engine light and stored error code. Before replacing the sensor, I would recommend a thorough inspection of the wiring and connectors for any signs of damage or corrosion. What error code specifically are you receiving?

Thanks for the quick reply! The error code is P2201. I will inspect the connections as you advised. Is it possible that a faulty catalytic converter could also cause a NOx sensor error?

While a failing catalytic converter can indirectly affect NOx sensor readings, code P2201 specifically indicates an issue with the sensor's electrical circuit itself. Given your symptoms and the error code, focusing on the wiring and connectors associated with the NOx sensor is the most prudent first step. However, if the problem persists after addressing the connections, further diagnostics within a workshop would be advisable to exclude consequential damage.

Thanks a lot for your help. I checked the connection, cleaned it, and the error is gone. Turns out it was just a bad connection as you suspected. Cost me 95€ for the cleaning.
