Tourneo Weak Battery and Flickering Lights

Having issues with my 2006 Ford Tourneo with a gasoline engine. The battery seems weak when starting, especially in the mornings. The lights flicker or appear dim at times. Terminals are clean and tight. The battery is only 3 years old. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Ford Tourneo is experiencing weak battery performance and flickering lights, particularly during morning starts. The battery is relatively new, and terminals are clean, suggesting the issue might not be with the battery itself. A faulty voltage sensor is suspected, which could lead to insufficient charging, and replacing it resolved similar issues for another owner. It is recommended to have a professional diagnose the problem to avoid unnecessary replacements.

I had similar issues with my Tourneo. The symptoms you describe sound very familiar. Have you had the battery tested? It could be a faulty voltage sensor causing those problems and leading to insufficient charging.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't had the battery tested yet, but I was wondering if it could be the alternator. Is it possible it could be the voltage sensor? Where is that located, and is it easy to test? Is it common for those sensors to fail?

It's certainly possible it could be the alternator, but the symptoms really point towards a faulty battery sensor in my experience. I ended up having it checked out at a workshop, who confirmed the sensor was defective. They replaced it, and the problem was solved. Saved me from buying a new battery or alternator unnecessarily. I would recommend having a pro diagnose it.

Okay, great. I appreciate the advice! It's good to know someone else had a similar experience. I'll take it to a workshop and have them check the battery sensor specifically. Thanks again for the help; saves me a lot of time going straight to the likely issue. The repairs did cost 315€, but at least it's sorted.
