Thanks! I haven't done any work near the pedals, and I don't see any damage to the wiring. Could a small, unnoticed bump really cause this? I thought these systems were more durable; it seems pretty sensitive.

They are sensitive! These systems are designed with safety in mind, so they react to any little thing. Yes, even a slight bump could cause it. Think of it like a pebble in a clock. But, if you're sure that didn't happen, and with that error message, I'd suggest a visit to a workshop. Brakes are too important to risk it!

Thanks for the help! I checked again and found the switch had come loose because of something I did while cleaning under the dash. I re-seated it, and the error is gone. Repair cost was 0€. Your advice helped me take another look.

Ah, the Toyota iQ! Your symptoms definitely point to the brake light switch. I had something similar happen with my old Corolla; that error message was so annoying! Have you done any work around the pedals lately? Maybe adjusting something or accidentally kicking the wiring? Sometimes a little nudge can mess things up. Check for any loose connections or damage to the wiring before you go too far.
