Thanks for the reply! I did give the wiring a quick once-over, but honestly, everything looked okay. I didn't dig in super deep though. What exactly should I be looking for besides obvious breaks or corrosion? Was your BMW's issue resolved by replacing the control unit in the end?

In my case, the issue with the BMW was indeed resolved by replacing the transmission control unit. However, before proceeding with a replacement, it is imperative to perform a thorough diagnostic assessment using specialized equipment to confirm the fault. I recommend consulting with a qualified technician who possesses the necessary tools and expertise to accurately diagnose the problem and avoid unnecessary expenses. I advise you to take your car to the workshop.

Roger that. Sounds like it's over my head at this point anyway. I was hoping it was just a loose connection or something simple. Thanks for sharing your experience; it's good to know I'm not completely alone in this! Looks like I'm headed to the shop. The mechanic has quoted me around 1000€, so let's hope that fixes it.

I understand your concern. I encountered a somewhat similar issue with a 2012 BMW 5 series a few years ago. The symptoms you describe, particularly the erratic shifting and the error code pointing to a control unit, suggest a potential fault within the transmission control module or associated sensors. It would be prudent to investigate the wiring harness and connectors leading to the control unit for any signs of corrosion or damage before condemning the unit itself. Have you checked these?
