Trafic gear shift indicator failure

My 2002 Renault Trafic with a gasoline engine has a dead gear shift indicator. I can't engage gears, the automatic transmission is shifting erratically, and sometimes it feels like it's slipping. I hear grinding noises when it shifts. I scanned it and got a transmission control unit error. I suspect the control unit is faulty, but want to confirm before spending 1000€ on repairs. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Whoa, sounds rough! I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra. The display wasn't completely dead, but it was showing the wrong gear half the time, and the shifts were jerky. Is it possible that this is a sensor problem?

Interesting! When you say 'sensor problem', which sensor are you referring to? Was it difficult to locate and replace? Thanks for the insight!

Honestly, I'm no mechanic! I just took it to the workshop, and they mentioned something about a faulty sensor on the gearbox. They replaced it, and it solved the issue. Best to have a pro look at it.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds like I should take it to a workshop. I will post what the repairs were. At least I have an idea of what to expect.
