Trafic high fuel consumption stalling smoking

My 2000 Renault Trafic diesel is giving me grief. 243318 km on the clock. Fuel consumption is terrible, it stalls when idling, the check engine light is on, and it smokes like crazy when accelerating. Thinking it might be the mass air flow meter (LMM)? Anyone else had similar issues?

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms with my Trafic: higher fuel consumption, rough idling, and the engine light. The MAF sensor is a likely culprit. Have you checked the air filter? A dirty filter can cause the MAF to malfunction by contaminating it with dirt and oil. When was the last time it was replaced?

Thanks! I did check the air filter, and it looked pretty clean. So, it was definitely the MAF sensor with your Trafic too? How did you confirm it, and what did you do to fix it? Did you replace it yourself, or did you take it to a shop?

Yes, it was indeed the MAF sensor in my case. A workshop confirmed the sensor wasn't providing accurate data for the air-fuel ratio after data logging and inspecting the sensor's readings using diagnostic equipment. Given your symptoms and mileage, it's highly probable yours is failing too. Replacing it isn't too difficult, but you'll need the correct tools and a replacement sensor. I'd advise getting it checked at a workshop; they can properly diagnose it and ensure the new sensor is correctly calibrated.

Okay, that's super helpful. Sounds like a trip to the mechanic is in order then. I appreciate you sharing your experience! Mechanic quoted me 365€ for the repair, including the new sensor. I'll report back after the repair, hopefully it fixes it.
