Trafic rough running stalling

Having trouble with my 2009 Renault Trafic (gasoline engine). It's got about 205k km on it. Lately, it's been running really rough, and sometimes it even stalls when I'm idling. The check engine light is also on, and it feels like it's jerking a bit when I try to accelerate. I took a look and the cable and plug connection look a bit worn to me. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Summary of the thread

The 2009 Renault Trafic was experiencing rough running, stalling, and jerking during acceleration, with the check engine light on. These symptoms suggested a possible defective ignition coil, especially given the vehicle's mileage. The worn cable and plug connection were also noted as potential issues. It was recommended to have a professional diagnose the problem, which confirmed the faulty ignition coil and broken connection, leading to a successful repair.

From your description, it sounds like you may have a defective ignition coil. Rough running, stalling, the check engine light, and jerking during acceleration are all common symptoms of coil failure. Given the mileage, it is certainly plausible. Have you checked the coil packs for any visible damage or corrosion? Also, it would be useful to know if you have access to an OBDII scanner to read the error codes, as this can confirm the misfire and indicate which cylinder is affected.

Thanks for the quick reply! I don't have a scanner myself. Is there a way to test the ignition coils without special tools? I'm not super mechanically inclined, but I'm willing to give it a try if it's something relatively simple.

While there are methods to test ignition coils with basic tools, without an OBDII scanner to pinpoint the misfiring cylinder, it becomes more difficult. Given your description of a possibly defective cable or plug connection, it is highly probable the ignition coil is the culprit. Considering the symptoms and your comfort level, the most efficient route is to have a workshop diagnose the issue and confirm the faulty coil. This prevents potential further damage from incorrect DIY attempts.

Okay, I appreciate the advice. Sounds like it's best to leave this one to the professionals. I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on – it was a defective ignition coil! The cable and plug connection was indeed broken. Cost me about 95€ to get it sorted. Runs like new now. Thanks again for your help!
