Trafic transmission grinding noise

I'm stumped. I've got a 2004 Renault Trafic with a gasoline engine, and things are getting ugly. The check engine light and transmission indicator light are both on. It feels like the gearbox is slipping and shifting clunky, plus there's this awful grinding noise sometimes when it shifts. I even hooked it up to a code reader, and it's throwing an error related to the transmission. Could it be a defective torque converter lock-up clutch? Anyone else dealt with this kind of transmission issue?

The symptoms you're describing do sound concerning. I recall encountering similar issues with a 2012 Volvo V60 I owned previously. Before jumping to conclusions about the torque converter, have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? Low or contaminated fluid can often mimic the symptoms of a failing lock-up clutch. Also, what specific error code is the reader giving you?

Thanks for the quick reply! Good point about the fluid – I did check it, and it seemed okay, but maybe I wasn't thorough enough. The code reader spat out something about 'torque converter clutch circuit performance' – I can't remember the exact code number at the moment. Could a fluid issue really cause that specific error code, or am I doomed to a major repair?

While fluid issues can sometimes trigger a range of generic transmission codes, the 'torque converter clutch circuit performance' error, combined with the symptoms you described, does strongly suggest a problem with the torque converter lock-up clutch itself. Given the potential complexity and the specific error code, I recommend consulting a reputable workshop with expertise in automatic transmissions for a thorough diagnosis and repair estimate.

Okay, that's what I was afraid of, but thanks for confirming my suspicions. I'll take it to a trusted mechanic and brace myself for the bill, sounds like some transmission repairs are in order. I greatly appreciate the advice! It turns out it was the automatic transmission converter, needed a full replacement. Cost me about 2120€, ouch!
