Trailblazer Steering Angle Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Chevy Trailblazer diesel experienced steering issues, including increased effort and vibrations, potentially linked to a faulty steering angle sensor. These symptoms suggested problems with the electronic stability control system, which relies on accurate steering angle data. The issue was confirmed to be faulty coding of the steering angle sensor, which required specialized diagnostic tools to resolve. After professional intervention, the problem was fixed, and the vehicle's performance returned to normal.

No accidents, and no suspension work recently. I don't have a scanner myself. If the coding is off, could that cause all this? Is there a way to check that without special tools?

Yes, incorrect coding of the steering angle sensor can absolutely cause those symptoms. The system needs accurate information about the steering wheel position to function correctly. Unfortunately, checking or correcting the coding typically requires specialized diagnostic equipment that most home mechanics don't have. While it's possible to find generic OBD-II scanners that offer some advanced features, it's unlikely they'll provide the specific functionality needed for steering angle sensor coding. Given the symptoms and the potential for electronic stability control malfunction, I'd strongly recommend taking it to a reputable workshop with the proper diagnostic tools. It's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to steering and stability control.

Thanks for the advice! Took it to the shop, and you were spot on. The steering angle sensor was the problem – faulty coding, just like you said. Cost me 195€ to get it sorted. Runs like a dream now. Appreciate the help!

Sounds like a faulty steering angle sensor is a likely culprit, especially with those symptoms. The increased steering effort and vibrations point to issues with the electronic stability control system, which relies heavily on accurate steering angle data. Has the car been involved in any accidents or had any recent suspension work done? These events can sometimes damage or misalign the sensor. Before replacing anything, have you checked for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) using an OBD-II scanner? A code related to the steering angle sensor would definitely point you in the right direction.
