Trajet power steering fault
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Hyundai Trajet diesel is experiencing power steering issues, including a vibrating steering wheel and spongy handling, with occasional power steering failure. The problem may be due to a faulty cable or plug connection. Checking the hydraulic fluid level and inspecting the steering pump for noise are suggested initial steps. Ultimately, a workshop visit confirmed a defective plug connection, which was repaired for 95€.

Thanks for the tip! I'll check the fluid level in the morning. Is the pump easy to get to? And how would I describe the noise? Like a whine, or more of a groan?

The pump is fairly accessible. Honestly, though, if it's whining or groaning, and with the other symptoms you described, it's probably best to get it checked out by a workshop. Could be the pump itself, or something else in the steering system. I spent ages fiddling with mine, and in the end, I wished I'd just taken it in sooner!

You're a lifesaver! I'll definitely take it to a workshop. It was a defective plug connection, just like I suspected! They charged me 95€ to fix it. Thanks a bunch for the advice!

Sounds familiar. I've got a Trajet too, and I had a similar issue a while back. Check your hydraulic fluid level first. If that's okay, it could be something with the steering pump itself. Is the steering pump noisy when you turn?
