Trajet power steering fault

I'm having trouble with my 2001 Hyundai Trajet diesel. The power steering is acting up, the steering wheel vibrates, and the handling feels spongy. The error memory shows a fault, and sometimes the power steering gives out. I've checked the obvious stuff, but I’m thinking it might be a dodgy cable or plug. Any ideas?

Sounds familiar. I've got a Trajet too, and I had a similar issue a while back. Check your hydraulic fluid level first. If that's okay, it could be something with the steering pump itself. Is the steering pump noisy when you turn?

Thanks for the tip! I'll check the fluid level in the morning. Is the pump easy to get to? And how would I describe the noise? Like a whine, or more of a groan?

The pump is fairly accessible. Honestly, though, if it's whining or groaning, and with the other symptoms you described, it's probably best to get it checked out by a workshop. Could be the pump itself, or something else in the steering system. I spent ages fiddling with mine, and in the end, I wished I'd just taken it in sooner!
