Yes, the gear linkage feels completely locked in park. I tried the shift lock release, but no luck. What was the problem in your case?

Yep, sounds very familiar. For me, it ended up being a faulty control unit, just like you suspected. It's probably best to take it to a workshop, they can properly diagnose it and replace the unit if needed. It's not really a DIY job unless you're pretty confident with auto electrics.

Good to know. Sounds like I should see a technician. I'll book an appointment with a local workshop to check it out. Was quoted around 1000€ for the repair, if anyone else has this issue.

Hey, I had something similar happen with my Transit. Same symptoms – wouldn't start, check engine light, the whole nine yards. Does it feel like the gear linkage is completely locked up when it's in park? I remember that being a big clue for me. Have you tried messing with the shift lock release?
