Transit Electric Power Steering Failure

I'm having a concerning issue with my 2022 Ford Transit electric, which has 216137 km on it. The power steering seems to be failing. The steering wheel vibrates, handling feels spongy, and there's an error code. It's also much harder to steer. I suspect a defective cable or plug connection. Has anyone encountered something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2022 Ford Transit electric vehicle experienced power steering failure, characterized by a vibrating steering wheel, spongy handling, and an error code, making steering difficult. The suspected cause was a defective cable or plug connection. After consulting with others who had similar issues, it was confirmed that the problem was indeed a defective plug connection related to the steering system. The issue was resolved at a workshop without needing to replace the entire steering system.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

While not a Ford, I had a similar experience with my 2018 Opel Insignia. The symptoms you describe – vibrating steering, vague handling, and error messages – are quite familiar. In my case, it turned out to be a failing electric steering rack. The steering rack translates the rotational movement of the steering wheel into the linear movement that turns the wheels. A defective rack can indeed cause those issues. Did you check the pressure hose or the steering pump?

Thanks for sharing. Since my Transit is electric, there isn't a conventional pressure hose or steering pump, as it uses an electric power steering system. Could you elaborate on how the electric steering rack failed in your Opel? Were there any specific diagnostic steps that helped pinpoint the problem?

Ah, I understand the difference with the electric system. Apologies for the outdated analogy. With my Insignia, the garage initially suspected a software glitch, but after several resets, the issue persisted. Eventually, they physically inspected the steering rack and found internal wear and tear causing the erratic behavior. They also checked all the electrical connections to the rack. Given your error code and the symptoms, a thorough inspection of the electric steering rack and its connections is advisable. You mentioned a possible defective cable or plug connection; that's a good starting point. If you aren't able to diagnose the root cause yourself, I would advise you to take the car to a workshop.

I appreciate you confirming my suspicion. I took it to the workshop and it was indeed a defective plug connection related to the steering system. The repair cost was 95€, I'm just happy that I didn't have to replace the whole steering system. Thanks again for your help!
