Transit Intake Air Temperature Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Ford Transit diesel exhibited a check engine light and reduced power, with diagnostics indicating an issue with the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor. Possible causes include a faulty sensor or issues with the wiring, such as loose connections or damaged wires. A suggested solution is to check the wiring and verify the sensor's temperature reading; an incorrect reading, like -40 degrees Celsius when the engine is warm, indicates a faulty sensor. Replacing the defective sensor resolved the issue, restoring normal engine performance.

I haven't checked the wiring yet, good suggestion. When you say 'way off', what kind of temperature reading would indicate a faulty sensor?

I didn't check the wiring myself, not very experienced. My mechanic said the temperature reading was completely wrong, something like -40 degrees Celsius when the engine was warm. He suspected it was the IAT sensor, which, if faulty, sends the wrong data to the engine control unit, making the engine run poorly. I'd recommend a workshop. Cost me 155€ including the sensor and labor.

Thanks for the help! I took the car to a local workshop. They confirmed the intake air temperature sensor was defective and replaced it. Symptoms are gone, and the engine is running smoothly again. Repair cost me 155€, just like you mentioned. Appreciate your help!

I also drive a Transit. I had similar symptoms not too long ago – check engine light, sluggish performance, and the engine felt like it was struggling. I also got an error code related to temperature reading. Have you checked the wiring to the IAT sensor? Sometimes a loose connection or damaged wire can cause these kinds of issues before the sensor itself fails. Also, did you check the sensor's temperature reading using your diagnostic tool? If it's way off, that pretty much confirms it.
