Traveller coolant loss

Hi, I've got a 2017 Peugeot Traveller with a diesel engine, and I'm running into a coolant issue. The coolant level keeps dropping, triggering the check engine light and storing an error code. I've checked for obvious leaks around the radiator hoses and the coolant reservoir, but haven't found anything visible. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Peugeot Traveller with a diesel engine was experiencing coolant loss, triggering the check engine light. Despite checking for visible leaks, none were found. A suggestion was made to inspect the water pump and radiator cap, as these could cause coolant loss without obvious signs. Upon inspection, traces of dried coolant were found around the water pump, leading to its replacement, which resolved the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hello! I also own a Traveller with a diesel engine. I experienced something similar a while back. Have you checked the water pump? Sometimes they can leak without leaving obvious puddles, especially if it's a slow leak. Also, inspect the radiator cap; a faulty cap can cause coolant loss through evaporation. Is the coolant loss significant, and how often are you needing to top it up?

Thanks for the quick response! I haven't specifically checked the water pump, but I'll definitely take a closer look. As for the coolant loss, I'd say I'm adding about half a liter every couple of weeks. The radiator cap seems okay, but I'll double-check it. Is there anything specific I should be looking for when inspecting the water pump?

Given that you are topping up coolant every two weeks, the loss is significant. When checking the water pump, look for any signs of dried coolant or staining around the pump housing and weep hole. Feel the area, if possible, for any wetness after the engine has run. Honestly, with that level of loss, it might be best to get it checked out by a workshop before it escalates. A pressure test of the cooling system could pinpoint the leak if it's not immediately visible.

Thanks for the advice! I inspected the water pump as you suggested, and there were some slight traces of dried coolant. I took it to my local workshop, and they confirmed a small leak in the water pump. They replaced it, topped up the coolant, and it cost me 52€. Everything seems to be running smoothly now. Appreciate the help!
