Trax Diesel Preheating Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Chevrolet Trax diesel is experiencing issues with the preheating lamp not switching off, a persistent check engine light, and black smoke during acceleration. The problem is suspected to be a defective preheating control unit, though faulty cables or plug connections were also considered. After consulting a mechanic and getting a second opinion, it was confirmed that the preheating control unit was defective, and replacing it resolved the issues.

The smoke is definitely black. I had a mechanic check the car. He said the cables are ok, but he thinks the preheating control unit needs to be replaced. What was the problem with your Trax? How much did you end up paying for the repairs?

Ah, black smoke points to fuel issues, like the preheating system dumping too much fuel. Mine turned out to be a faulty sensor related to the preheating, causing similar issues. If your mechanic suspects the control unit and the cables are fine, might be worth getting a second opinion, but honestly, these things are a pain to diagnose yourself. Just take it to a workshop.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! I took your advice and went to a different workshop, and they confirmed the preheating unit was indeed defective. The repair cost me 95€, and now everything is back to normal. I appreciate the help!

I had something similar happen with my Trax. Not the same year, but the symptoms sound familiar: check engine light, weird smoke. I didn't have the preheating lamp issue though. Was the smoke black or more bluish?
