Troubleshooting Black Smoke and Drop in power in 2016 Hyundai H1 Diesel
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Hyundai H1 Diesel is experiencing black smoke, a drop in power, a check engine light, and a strong exhaust smell, potentially due to issues with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) or fuel injection system. The DPF might be overloaded, but given the vehicle's low mileage, this is unusual. A faulty fuel injector could also cause similar symptoms by disrupting the fuel-air mix. It is advised to have both the DPF and fuel injection system checked by a knowledgeable mechanic to identify and resolve the issue efficiently.

Thanks for the feedback! I haven't add anything unusual to my fuel recently. Honestly, it's been regular diesel all along. And on the mileage, she's clocked 9685 KM. My last service was just a few months back. Replacing the DPF does sound like a pricey fix but if it needs to be done, I guess gotta do what's best for my Hyundai. Cheers for the advice!

No worries! Given your Hyundai’s mileage, the DPF problem isn't typical at this stage. But things do happen, right? Looking at your last service, seems there's no connection either unless something was overlooked. But hey, better safe than sorry. Get a thorough check with someone who knows his around DPFs to eliminate that possibility. However, the symptoms you're explaining remind me of another situation I once encountered with a fuel injection issue. It can also lead to black smoke, drop in power, even the exhaust smell. An inefficient fuel-air mix can clog up stuff quicker, including your DPF. Might be worth having that checked too alongside the DPF. Less costly if that's the issue. Keep me posted on how it goes. Good luck again!

Cheers for the thorough response. Didn't really consider the fuel injector angle but it definitely makes sense. I'll make sure to mention both DPF and fuel injection to my mechanic. Hopefully we can find a simple solution to this. Grateful for all your advice. Will keep you updated on how it pans out. Have a good one!

Hey there, I recently had a similar issue with my 2014 Hyundai Starex Diesel. I'd say my car knowledge is sitting at some experience level - enough to troubleshoot minor issues and take swings at bigger problems too. Turns out my DPF was internally flawed, just like what you're suspecting with yours. I spent around 1550 Euro at my local workshop to get this sorted. My mechanic checked it thoroughly with some special tools, confirmed the problem, and replaced it. Just curious, have you recently replaced your fuel or used additives in it? Knowing your mileage could help too. Shoot those details and I could offer more insight. Good luck!
