Error codes, yeah, there was something. Control unit... that sounds expensive! Is it definitely the control unit, or could it be something else? What error code did you get?

The error code is important for diagnosis, but the symptoms strongly point to the transmission control unit. Without knowing the specific code, I can't say for sure. Slipping, grinding, and gear selection issues combined with a display fault are a pretty bad sign. I'd advise getting it checked by a workshop with diagnostic equipment, though. It could get worse quickly.

Took it to the shop; you were spot on. Control unit's fried. Quoted 1000€ for the repair. Ouch! Thanks for the heads-up; at least I knew what to expect.

I had similar symptoms with my Twingo. Sounds like a faulty control unit for the gearbox. The gear selection display is part of the automatic transmission system, and if the control unit that manages it is defective, you'll likely experience the implausible shifting behavior you describe. Have you checked the error codes?
