The electronic stability program seems unaffected, but I suspect alignment problems. Can a faulty steering angle sensor cause the observed symptoms without directly triggering the stability control?

In my case, the stability control wasn't directly triggered either, but the sensor fault was definitely the root cause of the steering problems. It might be best to get it checked by a workshop; they can properly diagnose the steering column and the sensor.

Thank you for the insight. I had the steering angle sensor replaced and reprogrammed. The repair cost 195€. The steering issues are now resolved.

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms - vibrating steering wheel and heavy steering - with my 2016 Opel Corsa. It was a sensor issue affecting the traction control. Did you notice any problems with your car's electronic stability program?
