Unusual vehicle height and strong rocking in the BMW 7 Series: exchange of experience and tips wanted

Hello, repair professionals! I'm worried about my 2018 BMW 7 Series (petrol engine, 41570 km mileage). I'm having problems with strong rocking and uneven vehicle height and suspect that the air suspension compressor is defective. Have any of you had similar experiences and can report on your visits to the garage? My last visit to the mechanic was not so great and I would like to gather more information. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2018 BMW 7 Series is experiencing strong rocking and uneven vehicle height, suspected to be caused by a defective air suspension compressor. A similar issue was resolved in a BMW 5 Series by replacing the faulty compressor, which fixed the extreme bobbing and uneven ride height. The suggested solution is to have the air suspension system checked, as it might involve replacing the compressor and possibly repairing the air line.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I experienced the exact same thing with my 2016 BMW 5 Series. During my last inspection at the garage, they found that there was a serious problem with the air suspension. The diagnosis was a faulty compressor. This was causing the extreme bobbing and uneven ride height - pretty much like your car. They had to replace the compressor to fix the problem. So, I think you may well have the same problem. Wasn't a walk in the park, I can tell you that. Have a good look before you go to the garage. Hope this helps you!

Hey, thanks for your reply! Seems like you went through exactly what my poor 7 is going through now. Would be really helpful to know how much it cost you to replace the compressor, if you remember. And has anything else come up since then? Would be great to know what I might need to adjust to. Thank you!

Hey, no problem, I'm glad if I can help! After finding the defect in the compressor of my air suspension in the workshop, it was fixed without any problems. Since then, my BMW has been running like a dream, without the bouncing and uneven ride height. So I can well understand your concerns. In my case, the air line was also defective, and the repair ended up costing me €155. But it was definitely worth it, and I've been on the road with a clear conscience ever since. So go ahead and get it checked out, it might be similar to the problems I had. Hope this helps you!

Great, that reassures me a bit! What you said definitely makes sense - I guess I'll just have to go through with it and take it to the garage. 155 for the air line and replacing the compressor sounds a lot better than I had imagined, to be honest. I think it's high time I got my BMW back on the road. Your information was really helpful, thank you so much for sharing! Maybe we'll both turn up at the same garage one day, who knows. Until then, have a good trip!
