Urbancruiser Hissing Sound Poor Economy
Summary of the thread
A 2021 Toyota UrbanCruiser owner reported a significant drop in fuel economy, a persistent check engine light, and a loud hissing sound during acceleration. After checking the air filter and MAF sensor without success, they suspected a vacuum leak, possibly in the intake hose. A suggestion to inspect the intake hose for cracks or loose connections led to the discovery of a cracked intake hose, which was replaced, resolving the issues.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely give the intake hose a closer look. When you had this issue with your Volvo, did you also experience any engine misfires or rough idling? And how difficult was it to pinpoint the exact location of the leak?

In my case, there was no engine misfire or rough idling, but each vehicle behaves differently. The precise location was difficult to determine without proper diagnostic tools. I suggest a visit to a qualified workshop, which will allow the leak to be professionally detected with a smoke test.

You were spot on! Took it to the shop, and it turned out to be a cracked intake hose. Replaced it for around 100€ and now the hissing is gone, the check engine light is off, and the fuel economy is back to normal. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I experienced similar symptoms with my 2018 Volvo XC60. Higher fuel consumption and a hissing sound upon acceleration were present. Have you inspected the intake hose for any visible cracks or loose connections? A leak in the air intake system can certainly cause those issues.
