Urgent: Audi A2 Oil Pressure Drop Causes Engine Knock

Thanks for sharing your experience. Really helpful as I am facing exactly the same low oil pressure issues on my Audi A2. My engine also makes those troubling knocking sounds and the oil pressure sensor keeps triggering warnings. Good to know about the worn oil pump being the culprit. Will have to get this checked properly to avoid complete engine failure. I am concerned about potential oil leakage causing additional problems too. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much the full repair ended up costing? Also, have you had any recurring issues with the oil pressure since getting it fixed?

Good news, since getting the oil pump replaced, my A3 has been running perfectly with normal oil pressure readings. The engine is now whisper-quiet with no more knocking sounds. The total repair cost was 755 Euro, which included replacing the faulty oil pump, installing a new oil filter, and flushing the system with fresh engine oil. While it was not a cheap fix, it was absolutely worth preventing catastrophic engine bearing damage. The oil pressure sensor now shows consistent readings, and I have not experienced any issues in the months since the repair. No oil leaks either. The mechanic did a thorough job cleaning the oil galleries and checking all related components while the pump was being replaced. Just make sure whoever works on your A2 uses proper diagnostic equipment to verify the oil pressure readings before and after the repair. A clogged oil filter or worn engine bearings can sometimes mimic pump failure symptoms, so proper testing is crucial for an accurate diagnosis.

Thanks for the advice. I took my A2 to a certified mechanic who specializes in these engines. The diagnostic tests confirmed a failing oil pump causing the low pressure, just as suspected. The repair took two days but everything is sorted now. They replaced the oil pump, installed a new oil filter, and flushed the entire system with fresh engine oil. The total came to 820 Euro, bit more than expected but worth every cent. The knocking sounds are completely gone and the oil pressure sensor shows normal readings now. The engine runs smoother than it has in months. They also found and cleaned some partially clogged oil galleries while doing the work. Really glad I caught this before it caused major engine bearing damage. The mechanic showed me the old pump parts, the wear on the gears was pretty severe. Will definitely stay on top of regular oil changes from now on to prevent similar issues.

Last month I faced nearly identical symptoms on my 2007 Audi A3 2.0T. The oil pressure gauge readings were erratic and the engine developed a distinct knocking sound, particularly during cold starts. The root cause was indeed a failing oil pump. This is a serious issue that requires immediate attention since low oil pressure can severely damage engine bearings and lead to complete engine failure. In my case, the oil pressure sensor readings helped diagnose the problem, but the mechanic found multiple related issues: Worn oil pump gears, Metal particles in the oil filter (clogged), Significant wear on main bearings due to inadequate oil pressure The repair involved: Oil pump replacement, New engine oil and filter, Cleaning the oil galleries, Inspection of bearing surfaces This type of repair is complex because it requires removing various engine components to access the oil pump. Driving with these symptoms risks catastrophic engine damage. Worth noting that oil pressure problems on these engines often start subtle but deteriorate quickly. Getting a proper diagnosis using pressure testing equipment is crucial before the damage becomes severe.
