The tool mentioned a general communication error, nothing specific. Is it possible for a simple connectivity issue to cause these symptoms, or is it something more serious like a faulty thermostat?

A general communication error could explain it. If the ECU isn't getting the right signals, it might mismanage the cooling fan. Still, with overheating and a coolant leak, I'd get it checked by a pro ASAP. Could be a cheap fix, but ignoring it could mean bigger problems.

Thanks for the advice. You were right. It was a corroded connector on the control unit. Cleaned it and replaced a short section of damaged wire. Total cost was 95€.

Whoa, overheating and coolant spills? Sounds rough. A control unit issue messing with the cooling system isn't something I've seen, but CAN bus problems can cause weird stuff. Did the diagnostics specify which control unit is throwing the error?
