V40 Defrost Air Distribution Fault

I've got a 2002 Volvo V40 with a gasoline engine and a weird defrost issue. The air distribution flap seems faulty. I'm getting an error stored, and the heating output is way too low. Could this be a cable or plug issue? Mileage is around 249294 km.

I had a similar experience with my V40. My problem was also tied to the ventilation system. The heating was weak, and it turned out to be a partially blocked heater core and a faulty blower motor resistor pack! Is the air blowing at all or is it just not warm?

The air is blowing, just not warm enough. And it doesn't seem to be directed properly when I switch to defrost, which makes me think it's a flap issue within the dashboard panel. Could the heater core affect the air direction too?

If the air direction is off, it's almost certainly a flap motor or linkage issue, like you suspected. In my case the weak heat was mainly the heater core. If you're not comfortable digging into the dashboard panel yourself, and you have the error code stored, a workshop should be able to pinpoint the exact defective cable or plug connection of the component and it shouldn't cost more than 95€.

Thanks a lot for confirming my suspicion and sharing your experience! I'll take it to a local workshop and mention the flap motor and cable/plug connection. Hopefully, they can sort it out quickly. I appreciate the help!
