V40 Numb Brake Pedal
Summary of the thread
A 2015 Volvo V40 owner reported a 'numb' brake pedal sensation, suspecting issues with the brake pads or rotors. The problem could be due to wear in the braking system or an undervoltage situation affecting the ABS system. It was suggested to inspect the brake components and consider electrical issues. Ultimately, a workshop confirmed the brakes were worn, likely accelerated by undervoltage, leading to the replacement of brake rotors and pads.

Thanks for the reply! I haven't actually taken the wheels off to inspect the pads and rotors directly yet. I was hoping to get some ideas before I did that. Undervoltage is an interesting thought, though. I haven't noticed anything else electrical acting up, but is there an easy way to check that without specialized equipment?

While a precise diagnosis of undervoltage requires diagnostic tools, observing the behaviour of other electrical systems (headlights dimming under load, slow starting) can provide clues. However, given your description and the potential complexities involved, I would advise against extensive DIY troubleshooting in this instance. The braking system is critical for safety. Consulting a qualified technician for a comprehensive inspection would be a prudent course of action.

Thanks, that's probably the right call. I took it to a workshop and they confirmed it was indeed the brakes, and as you suspected, the undervoltage had probably accelerated the wear! Got everything replaced, new brake rotors and brake pads, and the total repair cost was around 240€. Appreciate the help!

Greetings. The sensation you describe warrants further investigation. A 'numb' brake pedal could indicate several possibilities, though the age and mileage of your Volvo do point towards potential wear in the braking system. Have you inspected the brake pads and rotors for visible wear or damage? Also, consider the possibility of an undervoltage situation in the vehicle affecting the ABS system. Such a condition can sometimes manifest as unusual brake pedal feedback. Have you noticed any other electrical anomalies?
