V40 Temperature Sensor Error
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Volvo V40 diesel is experiencing a temperature sensor error in the heat exchanger, causing a stored error message on the speedometer and preventing the AC from engaging. Diagnostics suggest the issue may lie with the AC control unit, but sensor calibration could also be a factor. A similar case was resolved by replacing a faulty temperature sensor, and it is recommended to visit a workshop for professional diagnosis and repair.

Could you elaborate on the "weird readings" you experienced? Specifically, were they related to the temperature gauge, and did they correlate with the air conditioning malfunction? Also, did you see any issues with the cooling system?

Yeah, the temperature gauge was all over the place. One minute it'd be normal, next it'd be way off, even though the engine temp seemed fine. And yep, AC was totally dead. Honestly, after checking a few things myself, I just took it to a workshop. Turned out to be a faulty temperature sensor, just like yours. Save yourself the headache and get it checked out.

It appears a visit to a qualified workshop is indeed the most prudent course of action. I got a quote for 980€ to get it sorted. This covers the diagnosis, parts, and labor associated with replacing the defective temperature sensor and any necessary recalibration of the HVAC system.

Sounds familiar. I had something like that with my V40 – not sure about the exact build year, but the symptoms sound the same. Was getting weird readings, AC wouldn't kick on, and the system kept throwing codes. Did you check the HVAC system at all?
