V40 Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Volvo V40 diesel experienced engine and transmission warning lights, rough shifting, and occasional grinding, with the gearbox entering emergency mode. The local garage identified a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor. It was suggested that low gearbox oil could be the root cause, as it can lead to incorrect sensor readings and insufficient lubrication, causing the symptoms. The workshop later confirmed low oil levels, which damaged the sensor, leading to a repair.

The garage didn't explicitly check the oil level, only the error code for the temperature sensor. Could low oil cause all these symptoms, even the grinding? Is the sensor very sensitive to oil level changes?

Yes, low oil can trigger all those symptoms. The sensor monitors oil temperature, and if the level is low, it'll register incorrect readings. Grinding may be from insufficient lubrication. Check the oil level ASAP, or see a transmission specialist.

The workshop confirmed the gearbox oil level was too low, which damaged the transmission oil temperature sensor. The repair cost me 365€.

I have a similar V40. Rough shifting and warning lights sound familiar. My issue was also the transmission oil temperature sensor. Did the garage check the oil level? That was the root cause for me.
