V50 check engine light air valve hose
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Volvo V50 owner experienced a check engine light issue, suspecting an air valve problem possibly linked to the air intake. Another V50 owner shared a similar experience, identifying a defective hose connection in the secondary air injection system as the cause. This system helps reduce emissions during cold starts, and a faulty hose can trigger the check engine light. The suggested solution was to have a mechanic inspect and replace the hose, which resolved the issue and cost approximately 175€.

Thanks for the quick reply! No, the engine isn't stalling, just the light. Where exactly is that hose located? Is it easy to get to and check myself?

Okay, no stalling is good. The hose is near the front of the engine, kind of tucked away. I'd recommend taking it to a trusted mechanic; it's tricky to diagnose without the right tools and knowledge. If that hose is the problem, the repair including part should cost around 175€.

Alright, thanks for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were right. It was a defective hose connection. Replaced it, and the check engine light is gone. Cost me 175€ including the part like you mentioned. Appreciate the help!

I also own a V50. I had a similar issue, and it turned out to be a defective hose connection from the pump to the air valve, part of the secondary air injection system. This system pumps air into the exhaust stream during cold starts to help burn off excess hydrocarbons. When the hose connection fails, it can cause the check engine light to come on and even lead to engine stalling. Does your engine stall at any point?
