V50 Clutch Switch Problems

I'm having a weird issue with my 2008 Volvo V50 diesel. It's got about 62139 km on the clock. Lately, I've been getting an error stored in the memory, the gear selection display in the speedometer isn't working, cruise control is dead, and sometimes the engine just won't start. I suspect a bad clutch pedal switch – maybe a defective cable or plug connection. Anyone else run into something similar? Could a faulty clutch switch really cause all these problems?

Those are definitely strange symptoms. I own a V50 too, although I can't remember if I ever had those exact issues. However, a dodgy clutch switch can cause havoc with the car's safety mechanisms. Isn't the cruise control interlocked with the clutch, so it disengages if you depress the pedal? The gear selector display might also be linked through some kind of safety interlock. Does the engine crank at all when it won't start, or is it completely dead? Is it possible that there is something else that is causing this issue?

Good point about the safety mechanisms. When it doesn't start, it's completely dead – no crank at all. I was reading up on it, and it seems the clutch switch is part of the starting circuit as a safety interlock, but the gear selector display too? I just don't understand how these things can be connected. Did you ever replaced yours, and how to test it?

Right, no crank points even more towards that clutch switch. These modern cars are so interconnected, it wouldn't surprise me if the gear selector signal goes through the ECU and uses the clutch switch as a reference. As for replacing it myself, I must admit I didn't – electronics aren't my specialty. I took it to the workshop and they confirmed it was the clutch switch playing up. For 95€ I'd recommend you do the same, as this could save you from bigger, more complex issues.

Thanks for confirming. Sounds like a trip to the mechanic is the best bet. I've ordered a replacement switch and booked an appointment. Turns out the connector was loose, just as suspected. They cleaned everything up, secured the connection, cleared the error codes, and everything is working fine again. Bill came to 95€, exactly as you said. Thanks for the help!
