V50 Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Volvo V50 diesel exhibited a warning light and smoke during acceleration at around 54,858 km. Attempts to regenerate the DPF were unsuccessful, leading to suspicion of a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor. An OBD2 scanner confirmed the sensor fault. Replacing the sensor resolved the issue, eliminating the warning light and restoring normal vehicle operation.

Thanks! I read the error code with an OBD2 scanner, and it pointed to a fault with the exhaust back pressure sensor. What did you do when you had this issue? Did you replace the sensor yourself, or take it to a shop?

Since the error code points to the exhaust back pressure sensor, and given your symptoms, it seems like the problem. I'd suggest taking your V50 to a trusted shop. They can confirm and replace the sensor. That's what I did, and it fixed it right away.

Thanks for the help. I took the V50 to my mechanic, and they confirmed the exhaust back pressure sensor was bad. They replaced it, and the total cost was 245€. The warning light is off, and the car runs fine now.

I had similar symptoms with my V50, though I can't remember the exact year. The smoke and warning light suggest an exhaust system issue. The exhaust back pressure sensor measures the pressure there. If it's defective, the ECU might miscalculate the fuel mixture, causing the smoke and DPF problems. Did you read the error code?
