V50 Exhaust Flap Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Volvo V50 owner reported an error related to the exhaust flaps, noting increased exhaust noise and engine noise after a cold start. The suspected cause was a defective exhaust flap. A similar issue in another vehicle was attributed to a faulty exhaust flap actuator, which was confirmed as the problem in this case. Replacing the defective actuator resolved the issue.

Just the noise so far, as far as I can tell. What exactly went wrong with your BMW?

Right, mine was the exhaust flap motor that gave up. It’s like a tiny electric window motor, but for exhaust gases. I’d wager yours is in the same boat. Best get it checked at a workshop. Saved me a bunch of headaches in the long run.

Thanks, I appreciate the insight. I'll book it in for a checkup. Turns out you were right! The exhaust flap actuator was defective. Replaced it and all is well. Total cost was 190€.

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my old BMW 3 Series. Error stored, exhaust note went rogue – like a cello player suddenly decided to join a death metal band. I guess the flap actuator is the culprit in both cases. Are you experiencing any performance issues or just the noise?
