V50 Transmission Issues

I'm having transmission issues with my 2008 Volvo V50 diesel, about 105,000 km on it. The engine warning light keeps coming on, and sometimes the transmission warning light too. It's showing a fault with the transmission oil temperature sensor. The gearbox seems to be going into emergency mode occasionally, and I've noticed some slipping and unclean shifting, even some grinding noises. Could low gearbox oil level cause this?

Summary of the thread

The 2008 Volvo V50 diesel is experiencing transmission issues, including warning lights, emergency mode activation, slipping, unclean shifting, and grinding noises. The problem is linked to a fault with the transmission oil temperature sensor. A low gearbox oil level is identified as a potential cause, and after checking and topping up the oil, along with replacing the faulty sensor, the issues are resolved.

I had similar symptoms on my old Alfa Romeo. Warning lights, weird shifting. The error codes pointed to a sensor as well. Have you checked the actual oil level in the transmission? If it is low, that can throw off the sensor reading and cause havoc. It's the first thing I'd rule out.

Thanks for the tip! I haven't checked the transmission oil level yet. I wasn't sure if it was something I could easily do myself. Where exactly is the dipstick, and is there anything specific I need to look out for when checking the level?

On the Volvo, I am not entirely sure where the dipstick is located. However, if the oil level is OK, you can assume the sensor is faulty. I advise that you take it to a specialist garage to have it checked. They will be able to tell you more precisely whether the sensor is actually defective.

Thanks for your advice. I did take it to a shop, and you were spot on. The transmission oil level was indeed low. They topped it up and replaced the faulty sensor. Total cost was 365€. Hopefully, that's the end of my transmission woes!
