V70 Throttle Valve Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Volvo V70 with 209,383 km is experiencing reduced engine power and an illuminated check engine light, diagnosed as a throttle valve issue. Possible causes include a faulty throttle position sensor or sticking throttle valve, potentially due to the valve motor or sensor electronics. Suggested solutions involve checking for vacuum leaks, cleaning the throttle body, or seeking professional diagnosis and repair, which ultimately confirmed a defective throttle valve requiring replacement.

Thanks! The engine idling seems normal, no roughness or surging. But, I have seen a drop in fuel efficiency the last few weeks. Could this be related to a bad throttle position sensor?

Okay, consistent idling and reduced MPG alongside the symptoms really points towards a failing throttle position sensor or the valve itself sticking. Given the age and mileage, the valve motor or the sensor’s electronics are likely culprits. While you could try cleaning the throttle body, it might only be a temporary fix. Honestly, getting it properly diagnosed at a workshop is the safest bet to avoid causing more issues with the ECU. They can pinpoint the exact problem.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed a defective throttle valve that needed replacement. The repair was 265€, including parts and labor. It's now working great.

Sounds frustrating! When that check engine light pops on with power loss, it's almost always throttle-related on these Volvos. Does the engine idle roughly, or surge at all? Any change in fuel efficiency lately? A faulty throttle sensor can mess with the air flow readings and put the car in limp mode. Have you checked for any obvious vacuum leaks around the intake?
