V90 Automatic Transmission Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Volvo V90 diesel with 123,000 kilometers is experiencing automatic transmission issues, including improper shifting and emergency mode activation. The transmission indicator light is on, and potential causes include worn-out transmission oil or undervoltage affecting the electronic control unit. After checking for leaks and fluid levels, it was suggested to replace the transmission oil, which resolved the problem, restoring smooth shifting.

Thanks for the quick reply! I did check the fluid level, and it seemed okay, but I didn't actually replace any of it. Was your problem also related to the transmission oil itself, or was it something else entirely?

Turns out, the oil replacement did the trick. But the mechanic mentioned that low voltage can definitely mess with the electronic control unit for the transmission, causing those weird symptoms. I'd get it checked at a workshop, could save you a lot of headaches.

Appreciate the insight! Took it to the shop, and you called it – turns out the transmission oil was indeed worn out. Oil replacement plus labor set me back 240€, but now it's shifting smooth as butter. Thanks for the advice!

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my V90 (though I can't recall the exact mileage). Implausible shifting, limp mode... it was a nightmare. Did you check the hydraulic fluid level? That's the first thing my mechanic asked.
