V90 Camshaft Sensor Issue

Having trouble with my 2019 Volvo V90 hybrid. Poor starts and reduced engine power. Error memory indicates a defective camshaft sensor. Could a defective cable or plug connection really be the cause? Anyone experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

The 2019 Volvo V90 hybrid is experiencing poor starts and reduced engine power, with an error indicating a defective camshaft sensor. A potential cause could be a defective cable or plug connection, as similar issues have been resolved by addressing corroded or damaged wiring rather than replacing the sensor itself. A thorough inspection of the sensor's connector and wiring for damage or corrosion is recommended to potentially avoid unnecessary sensor replacement.

I had a similar issue with my old Audi A4. Symptoms were almost identical – rough starts, noticeable power loss, and the check engine light was on due to a camshaft position sensor error. In my case, the wiring harness going to the sensor had corroded pins. The sensor itself was fine, but the bad connection was causing all sorts of headaches. Check the sensor's connector and wiring carefully for any signs of damage or corrosion. It might save you from replacing the sensor unnecessarily.

Thanks for the quick response! You mentioned corroded pins. How exactly did you diagnose that? Was it visually obvious, or did you need some special tools?

I started with a visual inspection. I could see some green gunk on the pins of the connector. I then used a multimeter to check for continuity in the wires leading to the sensor. That confirmed the break in the connection. Given your symptoms and the error code, I'd suggest a thorough check before replacing the camshaft sensor. However, these sensors can be a pain, so if you don't have experience with a multimeter, maybe it is time to visit a workshop!

You were spot on! Took it to my local mechanic. Turns out it was indeed a defective plug connection. They cleaned everything up and replaced a small section of the wiring. Total cost: 95€. Thanks for the advice; you saved me a lot of stress!
