V90 Diesel Power Loss and Smoke
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Volvo V90 diesel is experiencing power loss and smoke from the exhaust, likely due to a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) issue. Despite attempts at cleaning and forced regeneration, the problem persists, suggesting the filter may need replacement due to backpressure. Diagnostic tools like an OBD2 scanner can help monitor regeneration cycles and soot levels, but a workshop visit confirmed the DPF was defective and required replacement.

How would you recommend I accurately monitor the regeneration cycles? Is there specific diagnostic equipment or software you found particularly helpful in determining whether the filter is beyond recovery and needs replacing?

I used a basic OBD2 scanner and a phone app to check the DPF soot level and regeneration frequency. Mine turned out to be too far gone, despite repeated regeneration attempts. A workshop visit is probably your next step, they should be able to confirm the fault with proper diagnostics.

I had a workshop perform diagnostics, and the DPF was defective and needed replacing. The entire repair, including the filter, cost 1550€ Thanks for guiding me.

I had similar issues with my V90 diesel. Reduced power and smoke usually points to DPF trouble. Have you tried monitoring the regeneration cycles? Is it attempting regeneration more often than usual?
