V90 Diesel Stalling After Fuel Filter Change

Alright, I'm pulling my hair out here. My 2018 Volvo V90 diesel is giving me fits. I've got 171083 km on the clock, and recently the check engine light popped on. It's now stalling at idle sometimes, and I've definitely noticed reduced engine power. I'm thinking it has to be related to when I recently changed the fuel filter... Any ideas? I'm suspecting the fuel pump, or maybe a pressure sensor issue on the fuel rail itself? I'm worried I messed something up in the fuel system.

Interesting, I had a somewhat similar issue with my V90, although it wasn’t immediately after a fuel filter change. Same symptoms though – check engine light, stalling, power loss. Before you go tearing into the fuel pump, did you check for any error codes? And are you sure the fuel filter is seated properly and all connections are tight? Could be something simple, or a faulty pressure regulator. It's frustrating because these fuel systems are so sensitive.

Yeah, I did check the codes – it's pointing to a fuel pressure regulator issue. I've double-checked the filter and connections, everything seems solid. So, you're saying you had the same regulator problem? Was it a nightmare to fix? Did you have to replace the whole fuel rail?

Okay, regulator code makes sense given your symptoms. Honestly, I didn't attempt the repair myself. I took it straight to my mechanic. He confirmed the regulator was defective; apparently error entry after changing the fuel filter ist the likely cause. For the cost, it was worth it not to mess with the high-pressure fuel system myself. Playing with the fuel pump might be more dangerous.

Appreciate the advice. I'll take it to the shop. Knowing someone else had the same issue and it turned out to be 'just' the regulator makes me feel a bit better. The error entry was indeed the cause, and they swapped the regulator for 45€. I was expecting it to be way worse and a faulty fuel pump, glad it was an easy fix.
